Storytelling: Martin Scorsese on the Importance of Visual Literacy

Image
The main point Martin Scorsese is trying to get across in his video " the Importance of Visual Literacy ," is that seeing stories happen is just as important as hearing them. Martin mentions that a lot of thought and work goes into the process of making a film. You have to think about all the different angles, lenses and lighting to get your story across to the audience. He adds that there are "certain tools you use, and those tools become part of a vocabulary that's just as valid as that vocabulary that is used in literature and our language." By saying this, Martin is again stating that visual literacy is of the same importance as reading a book or hearing a story. In conclusion, Martin believes that students should get a chance to see stories, (visual literacy) along with reading and listening to them. In my view, Martin is right because many people are visual learners along with auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic learners. I think after readin...

Storytelling: The Clues to a Great Story

Image
Andrew started his TED Talk, " The Clues to a Great Story " with the words "storytelling, is joke telling." He then continues to mention that stories affirm who we are and we all want affirmations that our lives have meanings. Andrew then adds that the greatest affirmation is when we connect through stories. There was a quote mentioned in this TED Talk which was from a social worker and it said "Frankly there isn't anyone you couldn't learn to love, once you've heard their story." Andrew then goes on to say the way he likes to interpret that is with one of the biggest story commandments, which is, "make me care." The way I see this is that in order to catch someone's attention or "make them care," is by putting something out there that's unique and eye-catching. I agree with Andrew about the fact that if you want people to care you have to be creative and know your audience. Therefore, I conclude that a story sho...

Storytelling: Digital Technology Allows Us to Tell Tales in Innovative New Ways

Image
The general argument made by Aleks in her article, Storytelling: Digital technology allows us to tell tales in innovative new ways, is that, "stories are memory aids, instruction manuals, and moral compasses." More specifically, Aleks argues that stories "have been the foundations for religions and political systems." When suggesting this, Aleks is pretty much saying that most religions are based on stories like the ones we read in the Bible. She writes about how the tools we use to tell tales are evolving and becoming more engaging. In conclusion, Aleks believes technology is changing the way we tell stories. I agree with Aleks that technology is becoming more advanced and there's more ways to make storytelling more engaging now. Instead of just reading printed word, the new form of storytelling that's coming from a "digitally enabled cabal," is more than just reinterpreting a text for the radio or T.V. I think Aleks' article gives you ...

Indigenous Use of Media

Image
The general argument made by Dan in his article, Indigenous Use of Media, is that with the help of things like journalism and television, Indigenous people are able "to disrupt national narratives and rewrite them from Indigenous perspectives." More specifically, Dan mentions that with the help of South Dakota's Rapid City Journal, he was able to share his story and prevent the opening of a military armaments test facility near the Black Hills, which are sacred to the Lakota. He also writes that "people with a voice develop a stronger identity, which is important for our survival." In conclusion, Dan believes that without media it would be practically impossible to help spread word quickly about an important matter to get the support you need. I have to agree with what Dan says in his article about the importance of media in our everyday life. Without reporters or news, we wouldn't know what's going on around us. For example, someone went missing a...

The Modern Form of Storytelling is Digital

The general argument made by Michael in his article, The modern form of storytelling is digital, is that the way we tell stories has been tremendously influenced over the last few years. More specifically, Michael writes that "social media has been the real turning point for how we tell stories." The three examples he gives us are, distribution shifted from cinema to platforms like Facebook, attention constantly decreased to a now almost standard ten second format, and protagonists evolved from a few Hollywood stars to YouTubers and influencers. Michael also includes that more social media platforms are now introducing storytelling, live. In conclusion, Michaels belief is that storytelling will change more from actual human interactions to interacting from Live VR, and it will evolve in the future and become more and more realistic.  In my view, Michael is right because social media is one of the most popular platforms for storytelling right now. Lets just say that I ...

What is New Media Storytelling

The general argument made by Amy in her article, What is new media storytelling , is that through new media, people are able to reach an audience easier. More specifically, Amy says, "those who wanted to communicate with broad audiences through multimedia had to go through the gatekeepers of 'old media.'" By writing this, Amy is suggesting that if platforms like YouTube didn't exist, it would be so much harder for people to communicate with audiences because you would have to do it through "old media." In conclusion, Amy believes that "storytellers gained access to a third option for sharing personal stories that was previously available only to professional filmmakers," and that now is the time to start experimenting with these new tools.  In my view, Amy is right because if we didn't have new media, sharing personal stories with audiences wouldn't be possible for everyone. More, specifically, I believe that platforms like YouTu...
